“Don’t allow a bunch of books to try and explain your life for you in terms of the chiseling and channels and chains of your past, to excuse you from your own activities or to legitimize your own impoverishments of mind and spirit. Listen! God is greater than all of that. And He brings beauty out of ashes. He gives the oil of joy for mourning. He gives the garment of praise for a spirit of heaviness. God is sovereign in these things.” –Alistair Begg
I fancy myself an intellectual most of the time. I love to learn. I love taking in information, even trivial information. And so when I have a problem usually my first steps steps to tackling it are to 1) ask others (wiser, older, more experienced others) about how to handle the situation and 2) read up on the topic by “experts”. Now, I am not in any means discouraging the seeking of help from those more knowledgable than ourselves. In fact, I have gained much by reading, as does every person who pursues it with diligence. However, I would offer this advice: 1) If you do get information and advice from a written source, be sure you know well the character and Christ-likeness of the author. 2) Go to God first. Often times, and I am no exception, we look for what the root of a given problem is– which is good. In order to properly kill the issue, you must uproot it. But then we stop there. We discover the cause and then presume it to be so terrible, so overpowering, that we live crippled and with our crutches of choice to cope with our past. But the problem is not the end. If God allowed it in your life, no matter the it, then He is able and willing and even waiting to use it to your advantage and to His. You may be dealing with a very sever scar, and I do not mean to make light of it. There is much on this earth that causes very real injury. But God made this earth, therefore there is nothing within it that He cannot conquer through you and in you, and His love for you is so great that He longs for you to come to Him with that pain and problem and lay it at His feet to accept His healing and life.
