In 8th grade, at the end of the school year, I wrote a thank-you letter to my teachers and slipped it under their doors. (Yes I was that kid.) It was only 3-4 months after my salvation took place and I had always had a soft spot for teachers. For years I thought I had lost it, which is odd considering I’m an incurable pack rat, but to my great surprise and pleasure, I found it in an old binder hiding away in plain sight. I wanted to share it with you and hopefully you will share it with all the teachers you know. (And if you happen to know an editor at Hallmark you can share it with them too as long as you credit me with it 😉
To all who walk the road less travelled; to you who brave the fierce jungle in an attempt to change the world; who enter a realm where the possibilities are as endless as the ferocious beasts you encounter each day:
Every day, your expertise and wisom, your tidbits and life knowledge are brought to our world. With your hammer of determination, you pound what morals and insights you can into our thick skulls… and then watch as it rapidly seeps back out. You are responsible for the future of the city, state, country… world. Our spheres of influence are yours, because we know what you pas on to us. We are the products of your hard work, your will, your hope, your faith. We are you in the future.
To you: this is what I, on behalf of the collective We, have to say:
Some do not appreciate you, some never will. Some will appreciate you in the years to come, some already do. Some have tortured you from first sight, some have sucked up to you for years. Some will love you like a parent until they die, some will hate you just as long. But take comfort; cast aside all this and know that you are not forgotten.
Your names will be engraved in the eternal halls of the great, among such earthshakers as Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, and the greatest of all, Jesus Christ. You are immortal, because each life you touch takes a piece of you with it, passing it on to later generations, leaving you not less than you ever were, but intead more. Every day you are worn down by us; abused by those you love and wish to help the most. But if all the thanks you ever get is an e-mail from a former student telling you of the wonderful things they have accomplished because of you, you are once again restored and prepared to battle us for control in the arena of attention and acknowledgement.
To you: know that you are more than any passer-by in our worlds of ignorance and apathy. You are the knowledge relieving our ignorance, the determination relieving our apathy. You are the people who were here before us and the people who will be here after us, contiuing in your quest to inspire the next generation of wild animals.
To you: know that you ARE appreciated. You ARE loved. You ARE inspiring. You ARE the champions of the uncharted wilderness. You are REMEMBERED.
From every student
From no student,
From the collective We,
