Afghanistan shall be an Islamic Republic, independent, unitary, and indivisible state.
The sacred religion of Islam shall be the religion of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Followers of other faiths shall be free within the bounds of law in the exercise and performance of their religious rights.
No law shall contravene the tenets and provisions of the holy religion of Islam in Afghanistan.
These are the initial three articles of the Afghan Constitution, drafted in 2004. Other laws prohibit proselytizing of Muslims by non-Muslims, airing media depicting non-Muslim religious practices, possessing non-Muslim religious writings, any speech challenging Muslim beliefs or practices, and building places of worship for non-Muslim religions. Non-Muslims are also required to identify themselves with yellow cloths on their roofs and yellow garb on their person… so that Muslims may keep their distance.
Immediate punishment is often the recourse for breaking any of these laws, including severe beatings.
There are countless stories of Christians being disowned by their Muslim families, being beaten, drowned, imprisoned, hanged, beheaded, and otherwise tortured for their faith in Christ. Although the Afghan government claims that people of all religions have the freedom to worship, their laws and practices disagree, to the point where practicers of different religions number only in hundreds out of a population of over 28 million.
Please pray for the Christians in this nation. Pray for their faith to be strengthened by the reading of God’s Word, for their Bibles to be hidden from Muslim authorities when their homes are searched, for their children to come to a knowledge of Christ and to worship Him with joy despite persecution.
Pray for the Lord to pour out His Spirit on all flesh within that country. Pray for the Islamic people to come to know the Lord Jesus Christ and for their hearts to be turned to Him in worship and repentance. Pray for the salvation of Muslims through the boldness of Christians in Afghanistan and for the repeal of unjust laws against differing religions. Pray for a renewal of government there, that the leaders would be humbled by the love of Christ and accept His free mercy and grace, and would pass on those gifts to the people as servants rather than as rulers.
Pray for safety and wisdom for Christians and for their faith to be like that of Abraham and Elijah and David and Noah. Pray that they would not become angry at their attackers, but would be given the grace to suffer as Paul and Silas did, singing songs of praise to the Lord despite their conditions.
And pray that we would also live for Christ so as not to make His life a mockery among those who differ with us. Though we may not be persecuted as some are in other nations, the eternal consequences for others may be more than we would want to bear.
Thank you for your love for His Church.
