According to an article published six days ago by AsiaNews.it, the Indonesian government has threatened to shut down six private Catholic schools, including elementary, junior high, and high schools, if they do not include lectures and lessons on Islam and the Qur’an.
Muslim students do attend these schools, but there has never been any push by parents or students to include teachings on Islam. Classes outside of regular school hours are available for students who desire them.
The schools were given until January 19th to comply. So far, the schools have refused to incorporate Islamic curriculum. No word has yet been released on the schools’ condition as of today.
Please pray for the administrations of these schools, for wisdom and guidance on the part of those in leadership. Pray for safety against potential backlash from the government and surrounding communities in East Java (province #20 on the map above). Pray for religious freedom in Indonesia in all arenas of life, including education.
Also, I would like to take a brief moment to announce the launch of my new blog, Remember Those in Bonds, that will be specifically for keeping up to date with Christian persecution around the world.
