I am pleased to announce that for the first time in my 9 1/2 years of my walk with Christ I finally have an honest-to-goodness ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER!!!
This is extremely exciting for me because it is something that I have not only lacked, but also wanted, needed and been encouraged to get. Most of the time, I have been closer to my male friends than my female ones, but there comes a point where you just can’t share with someone of the opposite sex what you can with someone of the same.
My partner is a great Christian friend of mine that I’ve known for about a year and a half. We set up weekly meetings, starting yesterday, and we opened up about what we were struggling with, things from our past, things we hope for our future, and set up guidelines about how we wanted to interact and what we wanted to gain from our partnership, what we expected and needed from the other.
This was not the first time I had tried to establish accountability with a friend, but ultimately the relationships never got intimate enough to be considered truly accountable. Either we weren’t comfortable enough with eachother or we didn’t make the effort to stay consistent. I almost passed this up because of busy schedules and my assumption that my friend wouldn’t really understand what I was struggling with.
But I was so happy that I decided to initiate this new phase of our relationship. She was too. She felt free and relieved that she wasn’t the only one who had something to struggle with.
If you don’t have at least one person with whom you can share your life with, the mundane and the serious, the deep and the shallow, someone who you know will stay in touch and ask the hard questions when needed but still encourage you and cheer you on when it matters most, I highly encourage you to find someone. Someone you can trust, who has spiritual grounding, who loves you and whom you love. Someone who you can give to as well as receive from.
Confession brings freedom and healing.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins. –James 5:16, 19-20
